Biography

Kent has a Jazz Performance Diploma majoring in Guitar from Vancouver Island University. After finishing post-secondary, he self-produced three albums of original songs and played 400-plus shows on tour. During this time, he headlined several music festivals, won 1st place in a battle of the bands in Calgary, and sold out venues in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Toronto. Since returning to Calgary in 2014, McAlister won 2nd place in his category at the Calgary Folk Fest Songwriting Contest, and also opened for Roseanne Cash. 

Kent has 10+ years of musical learning, 25 years of performance experience, and 17 years of teaching experience. His preferred genres are multiple: Country, Rock, Folk, Indie/Alternative, and Jazz. He prefers students 6 to 7 years old for Ukulele, and 7 to 70-plus for guitar. Kent prides himself on being able to adapt his teaching style to a student’s personality and learning style. He brings an easy-going approach that still encourages practice and goal achievement.
